Things to do in North Devon

Farmers Markets – Are held in all the local towns. They are held twice a week in South Molton on a Thursday and Saturday morning. A great opportunity to buy fresh local produce including cheese,fish,fruit and vegetables, baked goods. Also clothing,jewellery,plants,books,furniture,craft stalls and lots of nic nacs ! There is also a live stock market, once a week, on Thursday mornings.

Beach – Swimming, paddling, surfing, rock pooling, sand dunes, kite flying or walking North Devon has beautiful beaches to do it on! We are 11 miles from lnstow and 16 miles from Saunton. There are numerous other beaches, some of them award winning,some of them have surf hire and lessons, some of them have great cafes, lots to choose from Woolacombe,Putsborough,Barricane Beach,Braunton Burrows to name just a few….

Exmoor National Park – There is something for everyone- walkers,cyclists,horse riders and foodies ! Great places to go and picnic by a river, have a pub lunch or a Devon cream tea. You may even be lucky enough to catch a glimpse of wild red deer or the native Exmoor ponies. Stunning landscapes and a warm rural welcome await you …..

The Tarka Trail – is a series of footpaths and cycle paths ( rail tracks) around North Devon, that follow the route taken by the fictional Tarka the Otter in the book of that name. lt covers 180 miles in a figure-of-eight route. Enjoy the beautiful scenery in complete safety, with beaches and much needed picnic spots,café and pubs along the way ! Numerous cycle hire outlets hiring bikes, child’s seats, tag-a-longs and baby carts. Buggy friendly for walkers.

Golf – A great selection of courses to suit all abilities – High Bullen Hotel 18 hole has spectacular views and is our closest in Chittlehamholt, Portmore is besides the ND link road in Barnstaple,Royal North Devon at Westward Ho ! is regarded as the St Andrews of England, Saunton is next to the beach, so great for the whole family including the non – golfers !

Fishing – Spoilt for choice with good Coarse,Fly,Sea and Estuary fishing available locally. Riverton Coarse fishing lakes are besides the ND link road, you will see them as you drive to Barnstaple. Blakewell trout farm is Devon’s premiere fly fishing venue and has children’s fishing, just outside of Barnstaple. Osprey Charters do deep sea and mackerel from llfracombe

Museums – Cobbaton Combat Museum, South Molton Museum, North Devon Maritime Museum in Appledore, Museum of British Surfing in Braunton and Lyn and Exmoor Museum in Lynton to suggest a few.

Riding – Lots of different options for hacking out on Exmoor from West Anstey Farm . Riding along the beach and back through the dunes from Woolacombe riding stables or through North Devon’s countryside at Bold Try stables in Chumleigh.

Gardens and Stately homes – Tapeley Park and Gardens in Bideford, Arlington Court and Gardens in Arlington, The Castle Hill Estate in Filleigh, Hartland Abbey in Bideford, not forgetting RHS Garden Rosemoor in Torrington.

Theme Parks – Quince Honey Farm, Diggerland, The Big Sheep, Exmoor Zoo, Milky Way Adventure, Watermouth Castle,Coombe Martin Dinosaur and Wildlife Park to name just a few!

Walking – The whole of North Devon is a walkers paradise. While on holiday with us why not try one or two walks and enjoy some of North Devon’s varied and beautiful landscapes. Steep hikes across Exmoor, level rambles along beaches,family fun walking through sand dunes or exploring the coastline via the coastal footpath and the Tarka trail. Add in pit stops at village pubs or cream teas and you have something for everyone ! We have back packs and lots of the walks are suitable for taking the buggy.In your cottage in the Welcome Folder are local walks, we also have walking guides and are more than happy to share our favourite walks with you!
